Getting It Right on Day One
There’s truth in the old axiom: you only get one chance to make a first impression.
For an anxious seven-year-old starting at a new school, that first welcome—whether it comes from the receptionist, the headteacher, or most importantly, the classroom teacher—can be truly transformational.
Done well, it builds confidence, calms nerves, and sets the tone for everything that follows. Here's how to get it right:
Smile. It matters more than you think.
Use their name. Even if you’re still learning how to pronounce it.
Reassure them. Let them know they’re not the first new face in the room.
Be curious. Ask them about themselves. Show genuine interest.
Listen. And make sure they know you’re listening.
I’ve seen schools get this spot on—and I’ve seen what happens when they don’t.
Yesterday, I saw it done brilliantly. A school nailed that first impression, and as a result, I now have happy, reassured kids who feel good about the big changes coming this September.
They’ve already felt your values—before a single lesson has begun.
